
Hermosillo, Son., November 29, 2018.- High school students from "HS Centro Histórico León" obtained silver and bronze medals at the National Biology Olympiad (ONB) which took place in Hermosillo, Sonora.
The delegation of Guanajuato, which once again had an outstanding participation, was formed by: Libia Sahara Moreno Ibarra, winner of the beach medal and Aldo Hirán Tovar Domínguez, bronze medal winner, both from HS Centro Histórico León; Also, Tatei Werika Wimari Garza Rodríguez, María de Jesús Díaz de León and Andrea Sámano Nieto, accompanied by la Dra. Rosa María García Nieto, state delegate of the Biology Olympiad.
With the inauguration in Hermosillo, Sonora of the XXVIII National Biology Olympiad (ONB), a contest that seeks to awaken the scientific curiosity among young people and encourage them to be interested in scientific disciplines, began the activities of this contest in which 179 students from public and private high schools participated.
Dr. María Cristina Revilla Monsalve, coordinator of the ONB, said it is very clear that in these times in which the generation of knowledge and its application go hand-in, must be up to the occasion contributing to the formation of new researchers who are able to find alternatives to current and future problems.
"When a country is not able to generate its own knowledge and technology it is condemned to be dependent on countries that do", said the coordinator of the contest organized by the Mexican Academy of Sciences, Maria Cristina Revilla in the opening ceremony.
He recalled during his opening remarks that the ONB began in 1991 when in our country was detected an alarming low of the registration of scientific degrees, "a worrying situation, because when a country is not able to generate knowledge and technology itself It is doomed to be dependent on countries that do."
Once again, UG's high school students, rise the state and the university in this type of competitions, it is worth noting that in the last edition they obtained four medals.
For these young people culminates a stage of a year of preparation going through several stages of elimination, training and success is the result of the effort and dedication, the support of relatives, professors, former Olympians and university authorities that accompany in this process.
