Guanajuato, Gto., November 30, 2018.- In recognition of the exceptional contributions in the field of physics and its work of extraordinary value for the benefit of humanity and science, the University of Guanajuato (UG) awarded the Doctorate honoris causa to Dr. Octavio José Obregón Díaz, professor Researcher assigned to the physics department of Campus León.

In a public and solemn session, the President of the UG and President of the H. General University Council, Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino said that Dr. Octavio Obregón is "a rigorous, laborious, curious, inquisitive, restless professor, a scientist of strain and a real scholar."

This distinction of Doctor honoris causa, the maxim bestowed by the house of studies, is an irrefutable symbol of the admiration of his colleagues, of gratitude of his disciples, and of full recognition of his university, that knows to thank his contributions.

In addition, he said that with this distinction the University of Guanajuato recognizes the transcendence of science, and basic science – or as Dr. Obregón calls it-of "free science".

For his part, the honoree expressed his gratitude to the university community, his wife, Dr. Martha Silvia Solís Ortiz and his daughter Ariadna. In his message, he recounted the history of Science in Mexico, of those who have left their mark on research, and claimed the value of the original ideas, which are the ones that "revolutionize things and provoke transformations".

Dr. Obregón Díaz has an outstanding trajectory in the field of gravitation, relativistic astrophysics, supergravitation, field theory and string theory. One of the contributions for what is most recognized is the proposed use of supergravity in quantum cosmology.

The originality and depth of his ideas have given him international projection and have attracted the attention of important scientific figures, as is the case of the famous cosmologist Stephen Hawking, with whom he wrote a work in co-authorship during a stay in Cambridge University. Dr. Octavio Obregón became the only Latin American scientist with whom the English physicist published.

This was revealed by Dr. Cupátitzio Ramírez Romero, scholar of the Benemérita University of Puebla, who read the Laudatio. In his message, in addition to synthesizing the vast trajectory and multiple recognitions given to Dr. Obregón, he highlighted the agile, clear and organized mind of the scholar of the UG, as well as his long-term vision, which led him to strengthen the Institute of Physics of the University of Guanajuato (IFUG), and lay the foundations of what is now the engineering division of the Campus León.

On the other hand, the Rector of the Campus León, Dr. Carlos Hidalgo Valadez, recalled the impact that has had on the UG the arrival of Dr. Obregón Díaz, where he has directed more than 30 theses and has contributed to the formation of scientists who have stood out at a national and international level.

He recalled that the Doctor honoris causa by UG is the author of more than one hundred articles published in journals of strict arbitration and has more than 2 A thousand appointments to his work. Dr. Obregón Díaz is a scientific leader distinguished by his creation, his vision and his work in shaping the structures that allow and guide the development of science, he said.

At the beginning of the ceremony, the rector of Campus Guanajuato, Dr. Teresita de Jesús Rendon Huerta Barrera pointed out that in Mexico the trajectories that manage to stand out are due to personal effort, talent and hard work. Therefore, she celebrated the vocation and example of a great university, whose work and contributions in the field of physics is of incalculable transcendence.

Dr. Octavio Obregón Díaz is a researcher emeritus of the National System of researchers (SNI), Doctor honoris causa by the autonomous Metropolitan University; He has been the creditor of the scientific research Prize of the Mexican Society of Physics, of the National Prize of Sciences and Arts and of the National Prize to the Socio-humanistic, scientific and technological research of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, among other distinctions.
