Guanajuato, Gto., December 3, 2018.- The University of Guanajuato (UG) will host the VIII symposium of Mountain Ecosystems in Mexico that, every two years, organizes the Universidad Veracruzana, Universidad de Guadalajara, the Centro Interdisciplinario de Investigación para el Desarrollo Integral Regional del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (CIIDIR-IPN), Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR) & Instituto de Ecología (INECOL), who will join this house of studies.

This was announced by Dr. Suria Gisela Vásquez Morales, full-time professor of the Department of Biology at the Division of Natural and Exact Sciences (DCNE) of the Campus Guanajuato de la UG, who participated with two papers in the recently held VII Symposium of Mountain Ecosystems in the state of Oaxaca.

Dr. Vásquez Morales also managed to bring the venue of the next meeting of researchers, to be held in the facilities of the University of Guanajuato in October-November of the year 2020.

The university researcher, who both she and her colleagues from the Department of Biology, will have the support of the institutions that have traditionally taken charge of organizing this meeting, but will work in this period, to create new networks, and new objectives to broaden the symposium.

As the UG enters the academic network, said, they will begin to assess the status of mountain ecosystems conditions in the state, for example, this city, was characterized by being surrounded by pine and oak forest, at present very devastated, so it must begin with restoration work, for which even has already collected oak seeds that will germinate, with the aim of creating reforestation programs in the same city.

The challenge now said, is to have the symposium, to expand it and to generate access of new institutions, in this case, of several universities and close research institutes.

She explained that these meetings have always been handled in three days, with two lectures a day and from 60 to 120 papers, depending on the venue, which also depends on the orientation given to the symposium, which discusses different aspects: Ecology, management, conservation, and biotechnology of ecosystems, mainly focused on mountain.

Said Dr. Vásquez Morales, that the University of Guanajuato has everything for the VIII Symposium to be successful: Prepared researchers, quality, human potential with graduate students, master and degree, plus many contributions with Other institutions, coupled with the necessary infrastructure.

On her attendance to the VII symposium of Mountain Ecosystems in Mexico, held from October 29 to 31, 2018, in Oaxaca, commented that he presented two oral papers, the result of his research projects in collaboration with researchers from the Department of Biology UG: "Potential bioinsecticide of ethanol extracts of magnolia in fruit flies" and "Palynological analysis of seven species of Magnolia".

She considered that continued work in collaboration with the founders of the symposium was what allowed the University of Guanajuato to be chosen to be the next venue for this biannual academic event, thus integrating itself into the network of host institutions.

She said that this national symposium (although it always has at least one international guest) was created in the year 2005 with the initiative of the group of researchers from different academic institutions with lines and research projects in common and in mountain ecosystems with the aim of creating a network of collaboration and to generate a forum for the knowledge of the state of the mountain ecosystems in Mexico.

This is focused on topics of ecology, management, conservation and biotechnology, as well as the determinants in the functioning of mountain ecosystems to improve their sustainable use.

Finally, she said that it is intended on this next occasion, within the program, to pay homage to the founders: Dr. Lázaro Rafael Sánchez Velásquez of the Instituto de Biotecnología y Ecología Aplicada (INBIOTECA) of the Universidad Veracruzana.

Dr. Luis Manuel Martínez from the Centro Universitario de la Costa Sur (CUCSUR) of the Universidad de Guadalajara; M. Graciela González from the Centro Interdisciplinario de Investigación para el Desarrollo Integral Regional (CIIDIR- venue Oaxaca), of thee Instituto Politécnico Nacional and Dr. Mario González Espinosa from the Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR-sede San Cristóbal).
