Guanajuato, Gto., March 12, 2019.- The University of Guanajuato (UG) is home to the V Colloquium on Gender Studies, which brings together academics, representatives from the Government and civil society sectors. In this edition the thematic axis is about violence in higher education institutions.

At the inauguration ceremony, the President of the UG, Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino, celebrated the realization of this meeting because it favors the work interinstitutional and therefore, the possibility of generating a greater impact in Around this problem.

He referred to the challenges facing higher education institutions to build better co-existence policies, and stressed that it is necessary to consider "what we are doing, what we have not done well, what we have not done yet, what we should and can improve and what we can learn from other institutions."

In her message, Dr. Rosalía Carrillo Meráz, member of the Consulting Council for the care and prevention of gender violence at UG and Executive Secretary of the National Observatory on violence between men and women (ONAVIHOMU), said that this colloquium invites reflection on the role that each person has to change reality and make universities free of violence.

She thanked the support of the General Rectory and the institutional Program for Gender Equality (UGénero), led by Lic. Lourdes Elena Gazol Patiño. It also revealed that although the participation of between 50 and 80 people was originally considered, about 280 participants from all over the country were registered.

Prior to the opening ceremony, Dr. Cynthia Galicia Mendoza (Ombuds Person of the Senate of the Republic), gave a keynote speech in which she made an analysis of the situation of femicide in Guanajuato.

In this regard, she stressed the importance of carrying out events such as this colloquium, "because it is in the academy where they generate knowledge that they serve later as public policy".

It is important to mention that the fifth Symposium on Gender studies will also give the first national certification on gender violence in public universities and higher education institutions (IES).

The event is held on March 12th and 13th in UG's Magnus Spaces, where in addition to lectures and editorial presentations will be held 13 work tables where the main topics of violence are explored, both theoretical and practical, to analyze possible solutions to this phenomenon, with special emphasis on the role of educational institutions.
