Guanajuato, Gto., April 29, 2019.- Sac Medina, a graduate of the University of Guanajuato, won an international competition between students of astronomy of all levels-Bachelor, master and doctorate-the event was organized by the International Astronomical Union in the framework of the Celebration of its 100th anniversary.

The competition consisted in writing a short story in English that aimed to stimulate creativity and imagination and assess the commitment of young scientists in their activities. The graduate of the University of Guanajuato won in the category "Inspiring stars: Stories that show the important role that astronomy plays in the issues of inclusion, equity and diversity."

Sac Medina mentioned "art and science are inseparable to me and this recognition impels me to continue working on more possibilities to combine my two great passions. Having won greatly motivates me to continue doing something that excites me very much: writing. "

He also emphasized that "it is a great pride to put the name of Mexico and its astronomical heritage at the top of an international competition like this". In winning this recognition, Sac Medina was invited to attend the exclusive event, the anniversary ceremony of the 100 years of the founding of the International Astronomical Union in Brussels, Belgium. "At the ceremony I was able to read my story to the attendees, among them were scientists who had won the Nobel Prize, directors of prestigious astronomy institutes and politicians from different parts of the world."

The story she wrote narrates the life of a girl who is inspired by her grandfather overcome many difficulties and becomes a respected astronomer. Finally, the laureate spoke of her academic career, "I studied The Bachelor of Science (physics) at the Autonomous University of the state of Morelos, then the Master of Science (astrophysics) in the Department of Astronomy at the University of Guanajuato ".

She commented that for her master's thesis she made a research stay at the Institute of Radio astronomy and Astrophysics of the UNAM Campus in Morelia and received a prize for the best thesis of Mexican mastery. Currently, Sac Medina is completing her PhD studies in Astrophysics.
