Salamanca, Gto., March 14, 2019.- The Mexican Academy of Optics (AMO) will award several awards this year to encourage young researchers in this discipline of science and technology, two of which will bear the names of leading researchers at the University of Guanajuato (UG).

By agreement of the AMO's board of Directors, the award for best PhD thesis in Photonics in Mexico will be named after Dr. Gustavo Eugenio Torres Cisneros (†) who was a pioneer professor of optics at the then faculty of Engineering Electrical and electronic mechanics, today Engineering division of the Irapuato – Salamanca Campus.

The award for Best student poster in theoretical optics, will be called Jorge Ojeda Castañeda Award, as a recognition of the contributions made by this renowned Mexican scientist who meets more than 40 years of research work and is currently a professor at the Engineering Division.

The distinctions in mention will be delivered in the month of September, during the 10th Ibero-American meeting in optics, the XIII Latin American meeting in applied optics and lasers and the Mexican meeting of Optics and Photonics, which will be held in Cancun simultaneously.

The Mexican Academy of Optics will also deliver the Diana Tentori Santacruz, Roberto Machorro Mejía and Roberto Ortega Awards.

It should be noted that the scientific contributions of Dr. Jorge Ojeda Castañeda, have allowed him to be recognized internationally, since for this year he received two invitations as Keynote speaker.

An invitation belongs to the scientific federation that brings together a series of researchers from the east and the middle east, selecting as one of the speakers invited to the fourth Global Summit and Exhibition in optics of lasers and photonics, to be verified April 15th to 17th in Dubai, UAE. So far, he is the only Mexican to appear in the conference program, where he will alternate with scientists from 20 countries.

In addition, he was convened by the Portuguese Society of Optics, where researchers from Brazil, Portugal and Spain mainly exchange knowledge at the VII International Conference on Optics and Photonics applied, from May 29 to June 5 in Portugal.
