León, Gto., March 29, 2019.- To make a timely detection of diabetes and its renal complications, as well as to make health revisions to the population are part of the objectives of the working group of the Department of Medical Sciences of the University of Guanajuato (UG) León Campus that since the year 2017 supports people living with diabetes, as well as preventing and detecting chronic renal disease and detecting risk factors for metabolic diseases.

The research working group is composed by Dr. Juan Manuel Malacara Hernández, Dr. Nicté Guadalupe Figueroa, Lic. Mariana Vianey Nicasio, Lic. Claudia María Calderón, Dr. Luz Ángel Pérez Armendáriz, Dr. Elva Leticia Pérez Luque, Dr. Mónica Irazú Cardona Alvarado, Rosa Beatriz Pérez Mendiola and students of the master's in medical sciences.

As part of the work carried out by the research group, they attend health fairs organized in different parts of the city of León, in public spaces like citizens' squares, community centers, Municipal Institute of Women, Mexican Association of Diabetes in Guanajuato A.C. and private companies.

This project supports low-income people who are evaluated for diabetes to detect early biomarkers of renal damage to reduce the health risks of metabolic diseases such as hypertension, obesity, dyslipidemias, among others.

In the second instance, a selection is made for the beneficiaries of the service to attend a more detailed evaluation that takes into account their clinical history, family history, lifestyles, pharmacological treatment and are carried out laboratory tests of glucose, lipid profile, creatinine, glycosylated hemoglobin, general urine test, creatinine and albuminuria, in addition to measuring body composition and measuring the thickness of the vascular wall of the carotid as a measure of cholesterol accumulation inference.

In this sense, Dr. Nicté Figueroa commented in an interview that in addition to providing a free health service to the population contributes to the generation of knowledge related to chronic renal disease and its complications, in addition to establishing new Early diagnosis biomarkers and disease follow-up.

"We have found that there is a very different pattern in the expression of molecules that are called glycans in relation to people living with diabetes, compared to healthy subjects and these new molecules apparently could help both the diagnosis more Early or they are molecules that can serve as therapeutic targets," she said.

In addition, she noted that they also perform protocols to evaluate the hormonal profile and health of women in menopause with what "molecules have been found that are increased mainly in the vascular wall due to the low estrogens and we find that these Molecules cause inflammation in vessels and lead to such susceptibility or cardiovascular risk."

She indicated that these projects are duly approved by the Bioethics Research Committee of the University of Guanajuato (CIBIUG) and those interested in attending health reviews can do so through emails Esta dirección de correo electrónico está protegida contra spambots.
