
Guanajuato, Gto., a 6 de abril de 2019.- The Mexican writer Guillermo Sheridan was recognized as the winner of the second prize Jorge Ibargüengoitia of Literature of the University of Guanajuato in which he honored his outstanding career in the framework of the celebration of more than six decades of uninterrupted promotion book and reading, since the book Fair of the University of Guanajuato (FLUG) in this year reaches its edition number 61.
In a ceremony held at the facilities of the University of Guanajuato, Guillermo Sheridan dedicated this recognition to the 250 students currently studying the degree in Hispanic literature at the University of Guanajuato, "I hope these students persevere in this rare task of talking about the letters of Mexico, this prize is for them."
He also spoke of the relationship he had with Jorge Ibargüengoitia with whom he had a friendship in addition to be a scholar of his work because he is the compiler of many of his texts that later were published in the book "Fast Autopsies." The award-winning writer spoke of Jorge Ibargüengoitia as an author who is still alive today: "The new freedoms and the new motives of bitter laughter augur a long period of time for the sharp-eyed literature of Jorge Ibargüengoitia."
At the event, the writer and juror Evodio Escalante said that the writer of Guanajuato, Ibargüengoitia, remains an uncomfortable and critical writer at present, of much prestige as is William Sheridan who referred to as "the most brilliant and prolific essayist of his generation, an essayist and literary critic of which we cannot do without."
The writer Juan Villoro recalled some words of Ibargüengoitia in which he said that "nothing is more strange than the everyday" and that both Sheridan and the writer of Guanajuato share precisely that ability to find oddities in the ordinary, also mentioned who share "The melancholy that is the silent companion of humour." He stressed that Sheridan is a writer with a humour of lucid reverence and has a passion for literary genealogies.
The award was given by the President of the University of Guanajuato, Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino who expressed that the recognition is given by the unique style of Sheridan in all his literary work "and we do it because the writing is an exercise of freedom, freedom to account for what is seen, heard and felt."
It should be noted that the three specialists who integrated the jury of the Jorge Ibargüengoitia Prize for Literature in its edition 2019 were Dr. Lilia Solórzano: Essayist and professor attached to the Department of Hispanic Letters of the University of Guanajuato Dr. Evodio Escalante Betancourt: Essayist and academician of the autonomous Metropolitan University, UAM, Iztapalapa unit; and Maestro Juan Villoro: Recognized writer and winner of the first prize Jorge Ibargüengoitia of literature.
