Celaya, Gto., April 5, 2019.- The Biokids project was held for the first time at the University of Guanajuato, with the aim of bringing children between the ages of 6 and 12 to the world of biotechnology.

This was carried out thanks to the efforts of the students of the Biotechnology Engineering degree from the Mutualism headquarters of the Celaya-Salvatierra Campus of the UG.

The invited children came to the headquarters accompanied by their parents, then were divided into three small groups to take a tour of the research and Basic sciences laboratories, where they conducted simple experiments, easy to understand and execution, using creative techniques, through which they could arouse their curiosity and desire to know more.

Curious observed various objects through the microscope, experience for many was novel; astonished they saw the magnificent bone structure of various insects and the smaller elements of which are composed some flowers and plants. Then, they experimented by checking how easy it is to identify the DNA of their saliva and asked questions and more questions, everything they wanted to touch, everything they wanted to experience, see smell and open.

The students spoke in simple language, accessible, awakening in them the curiosity to know more, answering their questions and inviting to do others. Meanwhile, in another room, students of the 7th semester of biotechnology, talked with parents about this career and all the possibilities for those who study it and for those who receive the benefits of a biotechnologist.

For many parents, it is a little known degree, however, they explained everything that a specialist does in this area, who in their professional life realize all sorts of technological applications with the use of biological systems and living organisms or their Derivatives for the creation or modification of products or processes for specific uses, preservation or creation of life.

This activity called Biokids, was organized by Rafael Cano, Diana Paulina Campos, Paulina Cerda, Arlette Alejandra Juárez, Álan Eduardo Viguerías and Leonardo Zavala Moreno. Some of the experiments that were prepared for the boys were: "My first DNA extraction", "I am small but important" and "Beyond a magnifying glass", where they used the stereo microscope.

It is difficult to specify who had the best time, if the students, the parents or the children. All in their own way enjoyed sharing those moments full of science and fun in the facilities of the University of Guanajuato and surely when you re-publicize this invitation, many who want to go and be part of the UG family, for a day.
