Guanajuato, Gto., April 23, 2019.- In the last five years, the University of Guanajuato (UG) has become one of the institutions that have entered the highest number of patent applications before the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) and has made an important work promoting the culture of the protection of intellectual developments.

This was announced by the head of the IMPI's Bajío Regional Office, Lic. Alejandro Raúl Salas Domínguez, who explained that in addition to the promotion of records, the University has been concerned about installing specific offices of technology transfer, which is a complement in the industrial property cycle, since it allows to identify potential buyers of the technological developments.

Recently, UG researchers received the registration of six national patents, an international and a utility model, and the institution ranked eighth in the national universities with the most records.

Lic. Salas Domínguez recalled that important work has been done on this subject, and currently – in patent applications-Mexico is among the first 15 positions in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which is composed of 180 Countries. In addition, "last year we closed with about 166,000 records of brands and that positions it within the first 10 places," he remarked.

In this regard, he argued that the creativity of the Mexican is highly recognized worldwide. However, he felt that "we are creating and developing a lot of technology that unfortunately we do not know how to carry it out on the market and how to protect it."

At this point, he announced that-in any legal figure in the area of inventions-there is a very marked gap in the number of applications entered by Mexicans and foreigners. "We see that it is about 84 percent of foreigners against 16 percent of Mexicans," he emphasized that it is necessary to work to balance those numbers.

However, he clarified that these figures are also explained because many of the inventions are from Mexicans working in transnational corporations, which are reaching many strategic points in the country and require areas of science and technology, or request Universities and research centers specific developments that require to meet your needs.

Then, these universities or research centers have the specialized people who develop this industrial property, but they cede the rights to the company, that appears as titular of the patent, explained the holder of the IMPI's Bajío Regional Office.

Therefore, he considered that it is essential to promote a culture of intellectual property protection, and from an early age it is necessary to teach that knowledge can be protected through some legal figure. "There are high school kids who have very good ideas, lots of creativity and sometimes they don't have the right people who can tell them how to materialize these ideas," said Lic. Salas Domínguez.

He also raised the inclusion of subjects related to this topic in the curricula. Intellectual property is an intangible good of a company, so you should prepare in this subject to accountants, marketers, managers, designers, explained.

Finally, he recalled that the IMPI, as a government institution, acts as a facilitator and supports the technical side to help authors of inventions comply with the processes of industrial property registration.
