profesora-ug-rescata-historia-de-espacio-alternativo-de-arte-en-san-miguel-de-allendeLeón, Gto., November 16, 2015.- Maria Eugenia Rabadán Villalpando, professor at the Department of Cultural Studies of the Division of Social Sciences and Human Studies from Campus Leon from the University of Guanajuato, studies the archive of an independent art space, funded for the German artist Michael Peter Boch in 1995, from where this original research emerges on this episode on art in Mexico.

Maria Rabadán, doctor in history of art, mentioned that "in the 90's and early thousands there was an international independent space for arts in San Miguel de Allende, in which artists from different parts in the world and different disciplines, showed their work".

This space has the name "El salon" (The classroom) has not been investigated due to a lack of research in the history of art in Guanajuato; the episode has not been included in research on independent spaces comparable to this, such as "La Panaderia" (the bakery) (had some relation). "Salón dés Aztecas", "Temistocles 44" or "la Quiñonera"; all these independent enclosures had their peak in Mexico City during the 80's and 90's.

The importance of the space created by Michael Peter Boch, explains Rabadán, "was that it attracted international artists, some of them were later presented in Mexico City, partially reverting the state of things in where the capital of the country was the main attraction for contemporary artists. Peter Young Ford, North American artist for example, exposed his work in San Miguel de Allende, and participated in the community of Judson Dance Theater of New York, space who gave birth to the postmodern dance".

Rotraut Kelin Moquay is a notable artist that also exposed in San Miguel de Allende and was the contact between Michael Peter Boch and Maria Eugenia Rabadán to get the archive, which is now under the custody of the University of Guanajuato.

Through this alternative center, Guanajuato was located in the map of contemporary art in Mexico, "I've found several projects that later went to Mexico City, like Marcos Kurtycz's expo, presented in the Museum Carrillo Gil", said the academic from Campus Leon.

Great part of this archive is audiovisual and the original is VHS format, very own from their time. Michael Boch negotiated that the fil library from UNAM digitalized great part of the events "among these material there are many expos, for example, an event of interest is a performance from Felipe Ehrenberg", notable Mexican artist since the second half of the twentieth century. The material is uncut.

For Rabadán, is important to research how this community of artists subsists and comments, "Normally these alternative centers do not work with resources, because they do not have so many commitments. Received support in species, with projects contributed by the "Instituto Goethe México", but not much more.
