dr-jean-eddy-universidad-de-guanajuatoGuanajuato, Gto., Novemeber 16, 2015. Next Friday, November 27, Dr. Jean Eddy Saint Paul, professor at the Department of Political Studies from the University of Guanajuato (UG) will present "Los Chimé y los Tontons Macoutes, milicias armadas en Haiti" (The Chimé and the Tontons Macoutes, armed militia in Haiti), book in which he covers the sociology of the violence in mentioned country by analyzing the armed groups.

Researcher and professor explained that the text –written in French—is focused in two militia, "Tontons Macoutes", who served Dictator François Duvalier between 1957 and 1971, and "The Chimé", armed group who repressed the opposes of Jean Claude Duvalier's regime, who ruled from 1971 until 1986.

Even when in 1986 Haiti entered a transaction for democracy, the academic sustains in his book that despite the change of regime, the repression practices continued. "It seemed that the power elites have a certain influence to incur in the same political practices to prevent the political opposition or organized civil organization to occupy the public space and propose criticism to the government", sustained the academic.

The academic also examined the influence of the organizations in the civil society that –considers — had a key role in the politic life. However, he warns, "the civil society doesn't cover just the good actors, in Haiti there is a fight among associations who are fighting to construct a country with greater social justice, and the associations that seek to defend the status quo".

Jean Eddy Saint Paul is Doctor in Social Science specialized in Sociology from the "Colegio de México". In the University of Guanajuato, he is ascribed to the Division of Law, Politics and Government. His main research lines are historic sociology of politics; civil society organizations, politics from memory and citizenship; and secularization of the state.

The Book "Chimé et Tontons Macoutes comme milices Armées en Haiti", published by Cidihca editions, presented in Montreal, Canada past October 24. The editorial presentation at the University of Guanajuato will be next November 27 at noon in the auditorium "Euquerio Guerrero".
