Guanajuato, Gto., February 9, 2016.- With the purpose to know the damage that the chemical agents can cause in the health of the workers of the Leather Footwear industry, the Coordinator of the Laboratory Tower from the Division of Health Sciences from Campus Leon (DCSCL) from the University of Guanajuato (UG), Dr. Ana Lilia González Yebra makes research to benefit society.
In the last years, Dr. González Yebra has dedicated his professional career to research the noxious effects of the organic solvents for laborious exposition, in workers from the captive Leather Footwear industry in the city of León, Gto.
In a first line of research, the objective is to know if the organic solvents found in the air in the labor environment, caused an effect in a renal level, and in which they analyzed important biomarkers from samples of the workers who allowed to corroborate this damage.
Later, Dr. González Yebra continued with her research, but this time, to know the damage at the DNA level, which from a non-invasive technique, they took a sample of cells from the mouth mucus of the workers, that was then analyzed to evaluate the damage in the cells.
In an interview, the Coordinator of the Laboratory Tower from DCSCL, explained that the damage to the health are multi-factor and cannot be attributed to a determined cause. The workers are exposed to chemical substances in and out of their labor environment, but also there are other toxic agents such as tobacco and alcohol in everyday life.
It is important to mention that the research work done by Dr. Ana Lilia, have been published in many international magazines throughout the years.
Currently she is responsible of the project titled "Frecuencia de Síndrome Metabólico y su Asociación con la Alimentación y la Actividad Física en Trabajadores del Sectro Cuero Calzado" (Frequency of the Metabolic syndrome and its association with food and physical activity in workers from the leather footwear industry), of the Nutrition degree student, Maria del Carmen Hernández Gómez, who also has the contribution of Dr. Daniela Beatriz Muñoz López, Dr. Mónica del Carmen Preciado Puga and Dr. Maciste Habaruc Macias Cervantes.
Such project concludes that the workers from the Leather Footwear sector carry out sedentary activities and the food they consume is not adequate, which leads them to increase the risk factors to develop a metabolic syndrome and chronic-degenerative illnesses in general.
From this research, they have contemplated to follow up every case, as long as they can, to create a change proposal and recommendations of physical activation for workers and in this way, reduce risk factors in health.
