Guanajuato, Gto., February 24, 2016.- From Campus Leon of the University of Guanajuato (UG) propose to make free audiometric studies for some school groups in the city of Leon, with the objective to timely detect subtle changes in the hearing function through the project "Application of Audiometry to children in Middle Schools to Evaluate their hearing capabilities".

UG's researcher-professor, Dr. Victor Hugo Hernández González of the Department of Engineering, and of Electronic and Biomedical Chemistry from the Division of Sciences and Engineering, together with their eighth semester student of the degree of Biomedical engineering, Paola Luz Eréndida Segoviano Arias, want to generate a culture of prevention, because hearing problems represent the first cause of sensory deficit in the whole world.

At the same time, they seek to reinforce education in selected topics with hearing hygiene, as well as to alert family members and teachers about this problem.

In a previous stage, it will be possible to donate the programs for the detection of this hearing loss (diminution of the hearing sensitivity) with the purpose to be the same teachers who can timely detect these sensory deficits and take proper medical and school measures.

Dr. Hernández González added that they pretend, that in the case of proving the hypothesis that modern hearing habits in youth have negative effects on their hearing function, to show these results to the corresponding authorities to sensitize them about this problem.

Derived from the effects noise can cause on people, there are some known details of what happens structurally in the internal ear after the acute and chronic exposure to noise. The damage, can be permanent, since those transducing sound cells die easily. These cells do not reproduce and thus are irreplaceable.

There are international studies that report contradicting results and thus, there is nothing conclusive, however, the consensus on the exposure to music in high sound levels can provoke permanent damage in the long term in the hearing function and besides this could have repercussions in the school's performance.

The main problem in hearing loss induced by bad hearing habit relies on that the last few dates of these anomalies, they present in earlier ages, therefore affecting the social and productive life of people, with its obvious repercussions in the personal, economical, individual and social development.

It is worth to mention that this project had an honorific mention in the second contest "Vive con Ciencia 2015" in the area of Public Health that invited to conform a high quality comprehensive health system for all the population.

The previous, with the mean to socialize the challenges of the Citizen's Agenda of Science, Technology and Innovation, bring closer the scientific and technological knowledge to the population and involve in this task higher education students, the National Organization Committee, led by AMC (Mexican Academy of Science).
