
Guanajuato, Gto., March 9, 2016.- M. José Luis Lara Valdés, from the Department of History of the Division of Social Sciences and Human Studies of the University of Guanajuato, dictated the conference "Cartografía histórica de Guanajuato en el tiempo de la Guerra de Independencia" (Historical cartography of Guanajuato in the time of the Independence war), in the Cultural Center Ignacio Ramírez "El Nigromante", in loc. San Miguel of Campus Guanajuato.
As part of the liaison with society, the university scholar developed the topic before a numerous groups of people, who knew about the differences from the type of cartography made during the first decade of the c. XIX.
Equally, M. Lara Valdés mentioned that it was the intendants' task to describe their territory, providing the New Hispanic government, both the technical resources as material for them.
He explained that one of the cartographies closest to the reality at the time, was the Humboldt blueprint (1803), which was made with the support from students of the "Colegio del Estado de Guanajuato." Likewise, he made reference to the fact that during the Viceroy Félix María Calleja, there was the cartography of roads, hills, harbors, based on the personal tour done by Calleja himself in the New Spain territory.
Finally, he mentioned that Viceroy Juan O'Donoju –last viceroy of the New Spain—was who ordered to gather all the cartographic material and taken to Spain, and currently is under guard of the Royal Academy of History of Spain (RAHE), institution that has such acquis online.
