
León, Gto., March 18, 2016. University of Guanajuato Campus Leon inaugurated a plaza in the Division of Social Sciences and Human Studies as part of the reforestation campaign in San Carlos under the name "Jornada por los árboles" (Journey for the trees).
Dr. Carlos Hidalgo Valadez, Rector of Campus Leon, Dr. Luxana Reynaga, Academic Secretary; Ricardo de la Parra, Director of Environment in Leon's city hall and Ricardo Ibelles, President of the "Fundación Rescate Arbóreo A.C. (FURA), were in charge of cutting the ribbon to start a set of actions that have the objective to create spaces with healthy ecosystems.
Dr. Hidalgo Valadez welcomed the attendants and thanked everybody's participation of everyone who has been involved in the reforestation campaign in pro of improving the environment. Besides, the remarked the importance of working together with the Director of Environment from City Hall and FURA's president.
In the same way he highlighted the outstanding participation of the students who have engaged with the project and have participated in the diagnosis to continue in the reforestation in several areas of campus. "This plaza is a space for university coexistence with species of trees according to our native environment and will allow to make the university community aware of the environment care and sustainability" he commented.
FURA's President mentioned some of the tree species that are found in different spaces in the University and the compatibility there will be with other species they pretend to plant. He also expressed the impact the reforestation campaign will have, and seeks to create a conscience in the university community to care for the environment and respect the spaces in which the living beings coexist. He highlighted the importance of knowing the benefits that provides the trees and the way in which we can collaborate in actions in favor of the environment.
As part of the activities there was a compost workshop and another of edible orchard in which students and volunteers participated to know the process to create compost, besides identifying vegetables that can be grown in-house for consumption.
