Guanajuato, Gto., March 24, 2016.- As part of her degree project, the student from the Nutrition degree in the University of Guanajuato (UG), Maria del Carmen Hernández Gómez, works in her thesis "Frecuencia de Síndrome Metabólico en Trabajadores del Séctor Cuero Calzado de la Ciudad de León y su Asociación con la Alimentación y la Actividad Física" (Frequency of the metabolic syndrome in workers from the leather-shoe sector from the city of Leon and its association with nourishment and physical activity).
In this project, Maria del Carmen evaluates several aspects of the workers in the leather-shoe sector from the city of Leon, Gto., together with the coordinator of the Laboratory Tower of the Division of Health Sciences from Campus Leon (DCSCL) of UG, Dr. Ana Lilia González Yebra.
During the research –with a sample of more than 160 workers—there was an analysis of the nourishment and physical activity made by them, the objective was to know how the life style is associated with the metabolic syndrome, which Maria del Carmen defines as a set of risk factors that detonate Diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases.
The main conclusion of this work is that the workers consume more energy than necessary, and that associates with components of the metabolic syndrome: cholesterol, high glucose, high indexes of obesity, among others.
Maria del Carmen explained in an interview, that the workers spend many hours dedicated to sedentary activities, both outside and inside work, which reflects in the appearance of certain risk factors for such a syndrome.
From those observations, individual recommendations and suggestions were given to each worker and the fabric in general, in a way they could know the health risks, and offer the opportunity to modify these nourishment and physical activity's patterns that have the consequence of possible future illnesses.
It is worth mentioning that the feedback from the results with each worker, generates thought about certain behaviors and provides an opportunity to create awareness about the need to prevent and periodic check-ups with health specialists.
