Guanajuato, Gto., March 21, 2016.- The objective is to evaluate the quality of life of the elders. A group of researchers from the University of Guanajuato, led by Dr. Daniela Beatriz Muñoz López, will make a comprehensive study in the 46 cities of the state of Guanajuato.
Dr. Daniela Beatriz Muñoz López, who is a professor-researcher of the Department of Medicine and Nutrition, indicated that it is necessary to evaluate the elders' quality of life, parting from different factors, among them, nourishment, with the mean to provide them a quality attention though prevention. For this reason, there is the plan to carry a study in 125 localities of the 46 cities in the state, where they will work with 1600 elders, 400 will be deeply evaluated from their self-perception of wellbeing.
Initially, the project will begin evaluating the nutritional state and the factors that associate to this in the quality of life of elders; since –as explained by Dr. Daniela—nearly 80% of the elders that go to a hospital for attention, suffer from a mal nourishment illness; such as anemia, diminished muscle mass, and in general, deteriorated health by diseases related with nourishment.
However, with support from state's DIF and the University, the research can be widened and deepened to comprehensively visualize the life conditions of the elders, from their habitat, where they live, how they live, which are the social networks, as well as the access they have to health services.
The works toward the realization of the study will begin at the city of Leon, where 24 undergraduates from nursing and nutrition will participate, in addition, two psychologists, who sum up to the field activities, applying surveys through a digital app developed by the own university, using special medical equipment, in search of collecting important information that tells us the health of the elders.
This research pretends to have benefits in the short, medium and long terms from a transversal perspective. In the short term, the important thing is to visualize and support the elder; in the medium term, well focused public policies must be generated and; in the long term, they must guarantee the conditions of the first stages of life, strengthening our activities and our sense of care in the future, as well as to promote healthy support social networks with positive feedback.
