Gilberto Esparza is a graduate from the University of Guanajuato (UG), institution which he still collaborates with, to execute his artistic projects.
Since an early age, the imagination and the creation were present in his life, in love of sci-fi, discovered his fascination for invention, hence, at first he opted for the career in Computing systems, in his city of origin, Aguascalientes.
Seeing his aptitudes, one of the professors made him aware that the University of Guanajuato offered (back then) the degree in Plastic Arts –now Visual Arts--, in that moment, he investigated and that is how he entered the classrooms of the University of Guanajuato.
In an interview, Gilberto Esparza mentioned that "one of the most interesting things of his time in UG, was that I met a lot of people, we made a group of students from different disciplines: theater, philosophy, music, architecture, literature, arts, etc. We started working together making experiments and doing things we didn't see in school. We bent a little the frontier of the conventional, we didn't question much about what art is or not and formed a very nurtured group."
Gilberto Esparza has taken the artistic creation as the base to continue learning new things, to go into other disciplines such as science, since he has worked with several scientists in his projects, for example, specialists in Biology.
The graduate from the University of Guanajuato, is convinced that art is a tool to generate knowledge and make works that function as devices for reflection, as a platform to generate new research lines.
"I think art is a space where there is total freedom, since there are no barriers nor limits," he said. Gilberto takes advantage of that space to generate a conscience through their work, which, worry for the environment care and the creation of new ecosystems, among other topics.
Curator Tatiana Cuevas, highlights that the work of Gilberto Esparza involves a tight correspondence with biology, engineering and robotics in projects that promote a cross between art, science and the ways we imagine the future.
Currently, Gilberto Esparza lives in Mexico City and San Miguel De Allende. He's made individual and collective expos in Mexico, United States, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Spain, Holland, Belgium, Slovenia. Has received important rewards such as the Prize for the Ibero-American Life 09 and the second place of the prize Art and Artificial Life 13 from the Foundation "Telefónica", Spain.
