León, Gto., May 3, 2016.- Dr. Victor Hugo Hernández González, researcher-professor of the Department of Engineering, Chemistry, Electronics and Biomedical of the University of Guanajuato, Campus León, participated in a conference within activities of the National Book Fair of León (FENAL) in which he explained the function, importance and fragility of the ear, as well as the new technology applied through light to solve hearing problems.

In FENAL's XXVII edition, Dr. Víctor Hugo Hernández mentioned that the hearing deficit is drastically increasing mainly in youth for different causes, among them the increase of environmental noise in cities, the important change of habits in new generations for the excessive use of earphones and the constant stimuli of technologies of information and communication.

The researcher from the University of Guanajuato recommended the attendees to take preventive measures to avoid deafness at an early age since recovering the hearing capability with the traditional method, which implies using a cochlear implant that stimulates the ear with electricity, is an expensive process and even limited. "The ear is highly sensible and delicate and sometimes its malfunction makes people isolate from others" he pointed out.

On another matter, he remarked that the breakthroughs in the application of light to recover hearing through optogenetics which is an emerging discipline that stimulates the molecules in the ear allowing a more detailed recovery of sound. It is worth mentioning that optogenetics is applied to distinct health problems such as the sight and different aspects of the brain and is part of the specialized research that develops in the University of Guanajuato.
