
Guanajuato, Gto, May 3, 2016. With the topic "University leadership," Southern Oregon University's Rector, Dr. Roy H. Saigo gave a Magister conference in the University of Guanajuato (UG), where he shared with the university community the keys for a successful leadership in institutions.
The scholar's exposition began from his life experience, which was branded by exclusion, being part of a Japanese family living in United States during WWII. Therefore, Dr. Saigo has worked to make the universities an inclusive space, where respect to people is fundamental.
Dr. Roy Saigo, who is recognized for his excellent management as President of the State University of St. Cloud Minnesota and his work in institutions such as Auburn University Montgomery and Southeastern Louisiana University, he remarked that as leaders, we don't have the privilege to take decisions without consequences," hence, the importance of listening collaborators and strengthen the teamwork.
He spoke about resistance to change in institutions, and the need to listen and integrate the proposals of all its members: directors, professors, administrators, councilors, coaches or intendants, "they all have to be part of the solution" of the conflicts that present in the universities.
For SOU's President, it is indispensable that institutions encourage diversity and provide opportunities to whom are in disadvantage, because listening to the minorities is what allows to cause a change.
For my experience in WWII--he said— "I fell that I can be the voice of who doesn't have a voice", he finalized.
Delivering the award for his participation as a speaker, the General Rector of the University of Guanajuato, Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino, reminded the relationship between UG and Southern Oregon University, goes back to the 60's, and settles in the bonds of friendship and collaboration.
After listening Dr. Saigo, UG's General Rector affirmed that this relationship between both universities also settles in that university mission we share, "sustained in diversity of and inclusion."
In Dr. Saigo's conference were present, as special guests, the Pro Vost Dr. Héctor Efraín de la Rodríguez de la Rosa, the Academic Secretary, Dr. José Luis Lucio Martínez; the Rector of Campus Leon, Dr. Carlos Hidalgo Valadez; High School Director, M. Martha Oliva Gallaga Ortega; and representing the Rector from Campus Celaya-Salvatierra, Dr. Ma. Guadalupe Ojeda Vargas, the Coordinator of Extension in Campus, Lic. Oscar Ramírez León.
From SOU were also present, the General Secretary, Dr. Susan F. Walsh and Chief of Mobility and Academic Exchange, Ms. Mary Gardiner.
