Guanajuato, Gto., May 13, 2016.- The "Laboratory of Applied Experimental Hydrology" is a research space where a group of specialized scholars will work for the purpose to develop strategies to supply water in towns. At the same time, they will carry an evaluation of the arsenic in the state of Guanajuato, and they pretend that researches create functional hydrological-numerical models to adapt them to the conditions within the state.

In addition, it will be the base in the search for measure to control certain problems such as overexploitation of underground hydric resources; water shortage due to draughts; soil erosion; loss of storage volume in dams; climate change; high levels of chemical compounds in Bajio's aquifers; just to mention some.

The problems about pollution and water supply to the state of Guanajuato grow strong every time, taking into account this concern; the University of Guanajuato performs actions about it to find a solution.

Proof of the previous, is the investment of 15 million and a half MXN pesos made by the educative institution to inaugurate the "Laboratory of Applied Experimental Hydrology."

On the matter, the General Rector of the University of Guanajuato, Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino, assured that the laboratory is an institutional co-responsibility, an effort from the university community and the beginning of a great work, because it will help solve the mentioned conflicts through specific actions such as adapting and coupling of rainfall-runoff models and hydrodynamic dam to support in strategies of safe supply.

Equally, there will be a constant monitoring of the climatological variables and the flows of the basins that supply the city of Guanajuato. Furthermore, there will be evaluations of hydric balances of such subjects with the finality to know the reload volume.

Dr. Guerrero highlighted that the University of Guanajuato is engaged with the needs of society, so he said: "Our house of studies is sensitive to problems that matter; we will redouble efforts to apply university knowledge to the purpose to find solutions for the problems that prevent an efficient development of our environment. An example of the remedies we can offer is this laboratory."

It is precise to mention that the laboratory is located in the venue La Perlita (Barrio de San Luisito), has a space for 13 professors as well as 50 students of degree and postgraduate from the Department of Geomatics and Hydraulics Engineering of Campus Guanajuato.

As witnesses of this inauguration were present, students, professors, administrative personnel and authorities from the University of Guanajuato, as well as, governmental authorities from the city of Guanajuato.
