Guanajuato, Gto., May 31, 2016.- Atherosclerosis is one the diseases that produce a greater range of mortality in the world, it is one of the illnesses that ends the life of more people annually due to the deposit of fatty substances inside the arteries.
In the University of Guanajuato, Dr. Silvio Zaina, has a whole career worrying about it, this is why throughout his career as a researcher and professor has made several studies that pretend to fight this and other diseases related with nourishment habits.
Dr. Silvio Zaina has a research group in the Department of Medical Science of the Division of Health Sciences from Campus León, same that has an agreement with CINVESTAV Irapuato.
For five years, researchers from both institutions –UG and CINVESTAV—have focused in the study of Epigenetics, a young discipline that reviews the biochemical processes that regulate the activity of the genes and answer the environment's influence.
In an interview, Dr. Zaina indicated that our diet, meaning, what we eat every day, can modify our genome be that to favor or increase the risk of some diseases.
Together with this research group, Dr. Zaina is in charge of studying the epigenetic modification that produce through nourishment. Within his scientific inquiries has found that both adults and babies, the arachidonic acid induces the increase of some epigenetic modifications.
Research that up until now have been developed by Dr. Zaina, clear the interrelation between what we eat, how our genome works and which is the risk form some important diseases.
Thanks to Epigenetics, they analyze the activity of the genes and can reach great discoveries to fight diseases, in the case of Dr. Zaina to find solutions to the illnesses related with bad nourishment as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, the own atherosclerosis, among others.
Dr. Silvio Zaina distinguished that his personal ambition is to create the bases to have an Epigenetics laboratory in Campus León of the University of Guanajuato, he affirmed that this initiative can be "one more piece in the puzzle that represents the experimental study of diseases, since it offers the possibility of identifying changes in the genome. We can use the Epigenetics to make an early estimate of risk through a blood sample."
Another functions we could make in the laboratory is the evaluation of the efficiency of molecule drugs. Regarding, there is a project with the objective to use a new technology of nanoparticles to send drugs specifically to arteries and in that way encourage or completely stop the progression of atherosclerosis."
One of the accomplishments the Dr. Zaina's research group has had is the recent publication of two articles in indexed magazines with high prestige, called: Epigenetics and Scientific Reports.
To finalize, he highlighted that the diseases mentioned above can be prevented or cured if you use common sense, it means, "limit to the minimum the industrial food, diversify the diet, equilibrate the consumption of fruits, vegetables and meat. As well as to eliminate soda and fight a sedentary lifestyle."
