León, Gto., July 26, 2016.- The Rector of Campus León, Dr. Carlos Hidalgo Valadez, and Dr. Maciste Habacuc Macías Cervantes, professor-researcher at the Department of Medical Sciences represent the University of Guanajuato (UG) in the Municipal Health Council of León, after they took oath as members.

The protocol event has led by Lic. Héctor López Santillana, Municipal President of León, who during his intervention commented: "I'm convinced that the future calling for the economy of León is centered in Health Sciences, León has many components of knowledge, professionals, equipment, services, it could be a very strong source of employment." In addition, he asserted that it is necessary to join medicine with optics, mechanics and electronics.

Dr. José Francisco Javier Sashida Vázquez is responsible for the direction of the Council, as vice president, the General Director of Municipal Health, Mario Sopeña Mata, and as Technical Secretary, the Chief of Sanitary Jurisdiction VII, Dr. Antonio Escobar Rodríguez. It is also composed by representatives of medical colleges and health professionals, hospital authorities and medical associations, as well as representatives of universities such as UG.

The main objective of this council is to contribute in guaranteeing the right for health protection from all the habitants in the city, strengthening the management capability of the municipal authority, before state and federal authorities in matter of health, to propose politics, strategies and action lines congruent with the established by the national health system in public health, medical attention and social assistance.

The Health Council could create the commissions considered pertinent where the prevention of accidents or addiction stand out. The functions of this council come from a health diagnosis presented by the Sanitary Jurisdiction VII, in charge of Dr. Antonio Escobar Rodríguez.

In the results from the diagnosis, they found the increase of suicides in the city, high index of addictions, teenage pregnancies, scorpion stings, car accidents, breast cancer and death by diabetes.

After this diagnosis, the Health Council will determine the actions and strategies to implement as an organ of auxiliary health, paying special interest in preventive actions.

The University of Guanajuato will work together, in a multidisciplinary fashion, in the actions and strategies defined by the Council members.
