
Guanajuato, Gto.., July 29, 2016.- As part of the activities made in the University of Guanajuato (UG) to contribute in the construction of a respectful society of the human rights, the Cinema Club of the University of Guanajuato (UG) carries out the 5th edition of the cycle "Desde la otra Banqueta" (From the other sidewalk), which through the Seventh Art shows a more diverse and comprehensive vision of the human being.
This year, is dedicated to the memory of M.A. Jorge Pantoja Merino, ex-coordinator of the Cinema Club, who totally supported the movie cycle on sexual diversity to consolidate it as a space for tolerance.
In the inauguration, the General Rector of UG, Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino, sustained that the respect for diversity are part of the essence of the University, which cannot exist without inclusion.
He added that the University cannot be an inside-wall project, and as part of this liaison with society is why this movie cycle occurs, since art and culture are formative activities, that contribute to the construction of a more just and democratic society.
In his intervention, the Procurator of Human Rights of the State of Guanajuato (PDHEG), reaffirmed the institutional commitment of opening spaces of tolerance and respect, and recognized the work done by the Collective SERes A.C., in collaboration with the University of Guanajuato, to make the cycle "Desde la otra Banqueta".
The President of the Collective SERes, CPA. Juan Silverio Ramírez Urbina, reminded the beginnings of the cycle, in 2012, as an initiative to make society aware about the necessity to eradicate discriminatory practices, and generate a culture where they live, defend and promote the human rights.
He pointed out that M. Pantoja Merino believed in the potential of the Seventh Art as a mean to educate people, and thanked the authorities from the University of Guanajuato for continuing to back this initiative, and worrying for constructing an inclusive society.
To the opening act attended, as special guests, the Director of Cultural Extension, Dr. Sara Julsrud López; UG's Academic Secretary, Dr. José Luis Lucio Martínez, and representatives of the LGBTTTI community, as well as representatives from associations such as collective Social Inclusion LGBTTTI; Collective Irapuato, Mr. Gay Bajío, among others.
In the first day of activities, they projected "Billy Elliot" (UK, 2000) and the miniseries "Tipping the velvet" (UK, 2002). Also part of this cycle are tapes such as the acclaimed "Happy Together" (Hong Kong, 1997) which granted the prize as best director in the Cannes Film Festival to Wong Kar-Wai, "Tangerine" (US, 2015), "La Ley del Deseo" (Spain, 1987), winning film of the National Prize of Spanish Cinematography and the prize Teddy (granted for the best gay or lesbian themed film), directed by Pedro Almodovar.
It is important to mention that the functions for this cycle will be in the Auditorium Euquerio Guerrero, next to the Antiguo Hospicio Jesuita, at UG's Central Building. The entrance is free.
